Forum threads argue about whether the turf will squash flat. That is the wrong question: the problem is level, not weight. We worked out the load per square foot for eight Intex pools from published capacities and set it against how a turf lawn is built.

How much does a filled above-ground pool weigh per square foot?

Water weighs 8.34 lbs per gallon, 62.4 lbs per cubic foot, so each foot of depth puts 62.4 lbs on every square foot. We divided the weight of Intex's published capacity by the footprint.

Capacities are from Intex product pages: Swim Center, 8 ft Easy Set, 12 ft Easy Set, 15 ft Easy Set, Metal Frame and Ultra XTR. Loads are our arithmetic, averaged over the floor, without liner or swimmers. The center runs higher: Intex gives the 12 ft pool a 23 inch depth, 23 / 12 x 62.4 = about 120 lbs per sq ft. We found no comparable Bestway figures.

For scale, turf plus sand infill weighs about 1.6 lbs per sq ft (how much turf weighs). A 12 ft Easy Set loads the ground as heavily as the heaviest acrylic spa in our hot tub on turf table, 115 lbs per sq ft.

What does Intex say about where the pool goes?

The Intex Easy Set owner's manual, covering 6 to 18 ft models, never mentions artificial turf, and we found no pool maker that does. Its site rules:

  • The area "must be absolutely flat and level. Do not set up the pool on a slope or inclined surface."
  • The ground "must be compacted and firm enough to withstand the pressure and weight of a fully set up pool. Do not set up the pool on mud, sand, soft or loose soil conditions."
  • No deck, balcony or platform, "which may collapse under the weight of the filled pool."
  • "The area shall facilitate drainage of the pool water after each use and/or for long term pool storage."

The warning explains why: ground that is not "flat, level, compact" could cause "the pool's collapse," and someone in it "could be swept out/ejected." The manual's test is to fill 1 inch first; if it runs to one side, drain, level and refill.

Why does a turf lawn fail those rules?

It is built on a slope. A turf base is graded at 1 to 2 percent (1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot) so storm water runs off; see base preparation. Across a 12 ft pool that is 1.4 to 2.9 inches of fall. Run the 1 inch test and the uphill side of the floor stays dry.

Its top layer is sand. Most lawns carry 1 to 2 lbs per sq ft of sand infill in the pile, and Intex lists sand as a surface not to use. The compacted rock base underneath is the firm ground the manual wants, but it is buried.

Weight is not the deciding problem. The base carries the load and the fibers mostly recover. The collapse warning is about slope, and no turf product changes it. On a roof or balcony, the deck code minimum of 40 lbs per sq ft settles it anyway (rooftops and balconies).

Our kiddie pool rule rests on depth: a few inches of water on a gentle slope just runs deeper at one end, with no tall wall to push over. Once a pool comes with a setup manual like the Easy Set one, follow the manual.

How do you set up a seasonal pool in a turf yard?

  1. Mark the footprint plus 6 inches, so the liner floor rests wholly on the pad, not a lip of turf.
  2. Cut and fold back the turf, along an existing seam where you can. Pull the nails and roll the piece back; cutting around obstacles covers clean cuts.
  3. Level the base. Cut the high side, fill the low side in thin compacted lifts, and check both directions with a straightedge and level.
  4. Finish smooth. A thin compacted layer of stone dust gives a firm, smooth top with no loose sand. Lay the ground cloth, run the 1 inch test, then fill.
  5. Put a hard landing at the ladder. Intex's troubleshooting chart traces "dirt or sand on pool floor" to "getting in and out of pool." Pavers or a mat stop infill riding in on wet feet.

When the pool comes down, regrade the patch to the lawn's slope and compact it, so it sheds water like the rest of the lawn. Then relay the turf, seam it, nail it and top up infill. For a pool that returns every year, build a permanent pad with a fixed border instead, as for a hot tub.

What happens to turf under a pool?

The fibers flatten. Weeks at 100 lbs or more per sq ft lays every blade down. Treat it like any matted area: brush against the grain, top up infill, give it a few weeks. Fibers still flat after that are worn out. Our brushing and grooming guide covers technique.

It stays damp and dark. A liner on turf all summer is the "covering the turf" case in our mold, moss and algae guide. Rinse the patch, dry it in sun, brush.

It can ripple afterward. Infill is ballast. A drain-down that washes sand away or softens the base removes what holds the backing flat. If the patch ripples, see wrinkles and buckling.

Does chlorinated splash-out hurt the turf?

Intex warns splash "could damage the surrounding vegetation." Turf is not vegetation, and normal pool water does little harm to polyethylene; our pool chemicals and turf guide covers what does. The real risk is dosing: an above-ground pool has no coping, so chlorine, shock and acid get added from the lawn. Pre-dissolve over a hard surface and rinse the splash band weekly.

Where should the drain-down water go?

Intex says to drain through a hose to "an area where the water can be safely drained away from the house and other nearby structures," and to check local disposal rules. Turf drains only as fast as the soil below takes it (how artificial turf drains).

Run the hose off the turf to wherever local rules allow, and not right after shocking, one of the concentrated exposures the chemicals guide warns about.

When does this answer stop applying?

Steel-wall pools go on a base built to their maker's spec, and in-ground pools are covered in turf around pools. Your pool's own manual outranks this page.

Frequently asked questions

Will a foam pad or tarp under the pool make turf OK?

No. A pad or ground cloth sits between liner and ground, but it follows whatever shape is under it. It does not remove the 1 to 2 percent slope, and it does not turn sand infill into firm ground. Build the level into the base and put the pad on top.

How long can a kiddie pool sit on artificial turf?

A day or a weekend is fine. Empty it, lift it off and let the patch dry in sun. Over a summer, move it at least weekly and brush each spot it leaves; parked for weeks, it leaves the same damp, matted patch as a big pool.

Do I have to remove the infill if I cut out the turf?

Most comes away with the turf. Sweep spilled sand off the base before you level, since loose sand under the liner is what Intex rules out, and brush it back in with a top-up when the turf returns.

Can I leave a frame pool on turf if it passes the level test?

Passing means that patch happens to be flat, but the sand is still under the liner. Hot Spring's spa instructions, quoted in our hot tub guide, warn that soft surfaces "will still have a tendency to settle unevenly," and sand-filled pile is a soft surface. A level pad on compacted rock is the setup the manual describes.
