This page is for homeowners who want turf on a side strip, a front yard or an old gravel pad where a car, trailer or boat sometimes sits. Installer blogs say "occasional parking is fine." The warranty texts and the city codes do not. We lined up both, plus a method for the one-off moving truck.
Do turf warranties cover parking or driving on it?
No. Each of the five warranties we read excludes vehicles by name or turf on driveways.
| Warranty | Term | What it says about vehicles | Heat exclusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSI Evergrass | 10 years, commercial | "Turf installed on driveways is not covered under this warranty" | "Localized heat or extreme heat including vehicles/tires" |
| FieldTurf FIT with attached pad | 5 years, prorated | Exclusion 20, "Damage caused by vehicle traffic of any kind"; exclusion 18, "loads exceeding 3 PSI" | Exclusion 13, "sources of extreme heat" |
| SYNLawn residential (effective 10/01/2019) | Up to 10 years, prorated | 3.6, "Damages caused by vehicular traffic" | 3.5, reflected light from Low E windows |
| Turf & Ivy (effective Jan 1, 2022) | 15 years residential | "Vehicular traffic" listed under exclusion 2; "damage by machinery or equipment" | Exclusion 6, "external heat source (melting)" |
| Lee Building Products | 15 years | Damage "on account of" accident, "machinery, vehicles" | Fire and tobacco products |
Two points sit behind the table. First, these exclusions cover the turf only. FieldTurf also disclaims "all warranties as to the base," and none of the five pays for labor or base repair, so a rutted base is entirely yours. Second, MSI's driveway line is not about damage at all: turf installed on a driveway has no cover from day one. Our turf warranties guide explains how the rest of these documents prorate and what to keep on file.
Why can't a turf base carry a car?
Because it was built for feet. A family lawn base is 3 to 4 inches of compacted crushed rock, sized to resist rutting from foot traffic; see base preparation. On top sit a flexible backing, 1.25 to 2 inches of fiber and loose sand infill. Nothing in that stack spreads a concentrated wheel load.
FieldTurf's 3 psi ceiling is the only number any of the five warranties puts on it, and it is written for a padded sports product. A car tire presses on the ground at roughly its inflation pressure, which is our working assumption for the arithmetic below. At a typical 30 to 35 psi, that is 10 to 12 times FieldTurf's limit, on every tire, every time.
The damage shows up in three ways:
- Ruts in the base. Rock under each wheel path compresses and shoves sideways. The turf telegraphs the dip, and water then ponds in it.
- Twisted and crushed fiber. Turning the steering wheel while parked grinds the pile flat in a circle; brushing helps only partly. See matted fibers.
- Seam and edge failure. A tire rolling over a seam or nailed edge drags the backing.
Compare what the paving grid maker asks for. The Grasspave2 cut sheet puts its 1 inch grid over a "sand and gravel base course" of 6 to 12 inches on compacted subgrade, and the grid's rings are there to carry tires. A turf lawn has neither the depth nor the rings.
What do heat, exhaust and drips do to turf?
Heat is excluded separately on every warranty above, and MSI names the car: damage from "localized heat or extreme heat including vehicles/tires" is not covered. Polyethylene fibers soften and melt far below the temperature of a hot exhaust pipe or a catalytic converter that sits a few inches over the pile after a drive. The mark is a hard, shiny patch, repaired the same way as a grill burn in our burns and fire guide.
A parked car also drips. Motor oil, coolant and brake fluid soak into the sand infill, where you cannot wipe them, and the oil and sap cleaning guide is about spot cleanup, not a daily drip.
Is it legal to park on turf in your front yard?
Where a city regulates yard parking, turf does not get you out of it. We read four city documents. None lists turf as an improved surface, and one bans turf where cars park or drive.
| City | Rule | What counts as improved |
|---|---|---|
| Roseville, CA (fact sheet) | Unlawful to park on "unimproved surfaces such as a front lawn or street side lawn area"; max 50% of the required front and street side setback may be improved | Not listed; improved areas built before the 2016 ordinance, gravel included, are grandfathered |
| Round Rock, TX (brochure, Sec. 42-322) | Front and side yard vehicles on an improved driveway or surface attached to it; paving max 50% of front yard (25% on a corner lot), standard 2-car driveway allowed | "Asphalt, concrete, brick, pavers or other equivalent materials approved by the City Engineer, but not gravel or crushed stone" |
| Houston, TX (brochure, Ch. 28, Art. X) | No parking on a non-improved surface in front or side yards, only in areas council has added, by petition of 60% of owners or a civic club or HOA application; fine up to $150, each day a separate offense | Materials "constructed to a depth sufficient to distribute the weight of a vehicle," e.g. asphalt, concrete, permeable pavement |
| Clearwater, FL (turf permit application) | Turf may not be installed "in any area used for the parking or driving of motor vehicles" | Turf named and excluded |
Round Rock excludes "gravel or crushed stone," which is exactly what a turf base is made of. Houston's definition asks the surface to "preclude deterioration and deflection of the area" under vehicle load, which a 3 to 4 inch lawn base does not. Roseville adds a cap that matters if you plan to pave instead: the improved area counts against 50% of the setback, so check with the planning division before you widen anything.
Roseville also bars large commercial vehicles: it prohibits vehicles of 10,000 lbs gross weight or more from parking on residential property. Your city's rules for turf itself, if any, are covered in do you need a permit for artificial turf.
Can a moving truck drive over turf once?
Yes, if you spread the load and keep it brief. Round Rock's code shows the same instinct: construction or landscaping vehicles parked on a lawn may be exempt if removed within 72 hours of the work finishing. On turf, plywood does the spreading.
- Lay two tracks of 3/4 inch plywood sheets, overlapped, where the wheels will run. Cover seams and edges with them.
- Drive straight on and straight off. No turning the steering wheel while on the turf.
- Keep the vehicle short-stay. Remove it and the plywood the same day so the fibers are not shaded and pressed for days.
- Brush and check. Cross-brush flattened pile, look along each wheel path at low sun for dips, and press seams by hand.
If the turf is new, wait until the seam adhesive has reached full strength, about 7 days; see how long before you can walk on new turf.
A rut that appears anyway is a base repair: pull back the turf, recompact the rock, relay. No warranty above pays for it.
What should you build instead of parking on turf?
Give the car its own surface and stop the turf at its edge.
| Need | Build | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Daily parking beside the turf | Concrete, asphalt or pavers | Listed improved surfaces in Round Rock and Houston; counts toward Roseville's 50% |
| Occasional parking, wants to look green | Paving grid with grass or gravel fill | Grasspave2 lists residential driveways and overflow parking; the maker steers frequent use to the gravel version |
| Trailer or boat in a back yard | Pad behind a fence | Round Rock lets unpaved back-yard parking stand if screened by a 6 ft wall, fence or plants |
| Turf strip between tire tracks | Do not | Each tire still crosses the turf edge, and Clearwater's ban covers driving areas |
A grass grid is living grass, so it needs water; a gravel-filled grid does not, but check whether your city accepts it, since Round Rock excludes gravel unless the City Engineer approves the material. Paving can also change your lot's impervious total; see is artificial turf an impervious surface.
Finish the turf against the pad with a fixed border, as in our edging and borders guide. Set the backing 1/2 to 3/4 inch below the pad so the fiber tips cover the cut and car doors do not catch a lifted edge. In a front yard, a paver band between drive and turf reads as design, not a patch.
When does this answer stop applying?
The warranties here are five documents, not every product. If a maker sells a turf system rated for vehicles, its own written rating outranks this page; get it in writing before you park. The codes are four cities. Yours may say nothing about yard parking, or may ban turf in more places than Clearwater does, and an HOA can be stricter than either. Turf laid over an existing concrete driveway is a different build with its own drainage and edge problems, and MSI's driveway exclusion still applies to it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I park a car on artificial turf just for a party?
Any damage from it is excluded by every warranty we read, however short the stay, and a hot exhaust can melt fiber within that time. Lay plywood tracks if you must, park front-in so the exhaust is not over the turf, and brush the area the next day. Guest parking on the street is the cleaner answer.
Does turf count as a driveway for parking rules?
Not in any code we read. Round Rock lists asphalt, concrete, brick and pavers and excludes gravel; Houston wants a surface built deep enough to spread a vehicle's weight; Roseville calls lawns unimproved. Clearwater goes further and bans turf where cars park or drive. Ask your planning or code enforcement office before you rely on turf as a parking surface.
Will a riding mower or golf cart damage artificial turf?
Lighter, but the same mechanics apply. FieldTurf's warranty excludes "vehicle traffic of any kind," Turf & Ivy excludes damage by machinery or equipment, and spinning or turning tires twist the pile. Keep golf carts on a path or grid.
Can I put turf on an old gravel parking pad?
As a lawn, yes, if you stop parking on it. The gravel can often become the turf base after regrading and compaction, and the base material calculator sizes any top-up. Check whether your city grandfathered that gravel pad first: Roseville and Round Rock both protect pre-ordinance gravel, and turning it into lawn may give up the right to park there later.
